Telfar Clemens
The Queens-born Liberian designer whose shopping bag — the "Bushwick Birkin" — has redefined accessible luxury.
Telfar Clemens was born in 1985 in Queens to a Liberian family that fled the first civil war. He attended Pace University and launched Telfar as a genderless label in 2005, at twenty. The brand existed in relative obscurity for a decade before the 2014 release of the Telfar shopping bag, a vegan-leather tote in three sizes with the embossed T logo.
The Bag
The Telfar shopping bag — priced USD 150–257 — became, in 2020, the most-discussed handbag release of the pandemic era. It sold out in minutes; resale markets inflated the price several times over. Clemens responded with the Bag Security Program in August 2020: an open-ended pre-order window in which anyone willing to wait three to six months could buy at retail. The programme was deliberately anti-scarcity, and inverted the standard luxury-handbag economy.
It’s not for you — it’s for everyone. — Telfar, brand slogan
Recognition
Clemens won CFDA American Accessories Designer of the Year in 2020 and American Designer of the Year in 2022. He represented Liberia as that country’s official designer for the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. The house has remained privately held and has refused outside investment. In 2022 he launched Telfar TV, a 24-hour streaming service that has since driven ~40% of the brand’s direct-to-consumer revenue.
